Day 1- DestinationSt. Helens, OR

This morning dawned clear so the traditional group picture was taken under the bridge after the luggage was loaded and breakfast. then we were off toward St. Helens. There were two major climbs today. The first one went to about 700 feet but with steps so it did not seem to bad. the second went from the level of the Columbia river to almost 780 feet with no breaks in about two miles, but we made it. Scenery today consisted mostly of forest with an occasional glimpse of the Columbia river. Tomorrow we may get some good views of Mt. Hood, weather permitting. we have one octogenarian on this ride and we did manage to catch up with him about two miles before we got to the motel in St. Helens. Thank Goodness! More tomorrow. Time for bed now.
Below is a shot of the Columbia gorge from Bradley Park, our first SAG (Support And Gear) stop. The forest was beautiful, huge trees, and even bigger stumps where logging had been done. Ferns abound along with beautiful snapdragons. In many areas, wild berries take over with the vigor of weeds. I hope to get picture of these.
