First Taste of Idaho

Our first taste of Idaho was good. Our ride was short, fairly flat, hot (93+F), and winding. Apparently to keep us off the busier roads, we took many backroads. This gave us a great opportunity to see how Idahoans really live. We saw innumerable fields heavy with hay. There were large corn fields and terrain that reminded us of Illinois, but many used the type of irrigation that runs down the rows; some had the clicking and rotating spray heads that move through the field. We saw sugar beets (I guess), potatoes, green beans, spinach, and other things. Anything, except for weeds and cactus of course, that was not irrigated was basically not growing. Although there were big farms, many seemed to be smaller than those in the Midwest. The sights, smells, and sounds were again great(and some not so great): birds, dogs, horses, dairy farms, hay, roadkill! For dinner we had an outdoor BBQ.

Our ride leader, Mike Munk, is a highly experienced, hard-working, and knowledgable guy and appears to be a natural at biking. He is maintaining and ongoing website that offers much more general information than Ken and I can provide. To view it go to: http://bamacyclist.com/Journal2009/North09/09North.htm
