I am Ken McGarvey and I am about to embark on what I consider to be a great adventure. This trip has been one of the things on my bucket list for several years and with the urging of my wife I decided this was the year. Tom Beveridge, a friend and neighbor will also be going and we will be joined in route by Ken Zika another close friend. LA to Boston is the normal route but for several reasons I chose to go from Asroria, OR to Portsmouth, NH. The route (which is shown on map above and to the left) seemed more interesting, more challenging and it started in June instead of May allowing more time to train outside. This year mother nature threw us a curve in the form of many, many days of rain but I still managed to get almost 1700 miles of training in since January 1st. I don't know if that is enough, but I am ready to get on with the real thing and leave the training behind.
So, Tom and I will fly to Portland and then make our way to Astoria on June 20th. on the 21st we will register, go through an orientation of sorts and possibly take a short ride to make sure our bikes are working OK after being reassembled, and dip our rear wheel in the Pacific ocean. On Monday the 22nd the pedaling begins in earnest with a 60-70 mile jaunt to St. Helens, OR. Today June 8th Tom and I dropped our bikes off at a local bike shop to be partially disassembled and put into a box so we can FedEx them to Astoria.
