Day 13 Saturday July 4th, 2009 Burley, ID (4165') to Blackfoot, ID (4497')

As we rode east from Burley, initially we saw more rich farmland. But then, as we bumped along on Old Highway 30, a seemingly abandoned road with closed or closing mom and pop businesses, we soon found ourselves in the middle of a huge open range, with no structures for miles. Every two miles we did the brrrrump over a cattle guard as the wind tried to push us west rather than our desired direction. I finally found a live version of the camouflaged critter seen slithering across the road - I hope but doubt he made it without getting flattened!

If you look carefully at the long low building shown, you will see that the roof is composed of bales of hay! They must have a hay excess around here at times. We saw huge wheat fields with sprinkler irrigation; this one has, as many do, large areas where the stalks are flattened, maybe by the weight of the ears and water combined. As we rode we watched the sky change from clear to having a full blown storm brewing in the mountains. We stayed dry again! We have been abundantly blessed with great weather.

Glory Alleluia, what a great day to be alive and celebrating the 4th of July pursuing our favorite pastime in this great country of ours. A slight headwind, which according to the staff kept the temperatures to a very pleasant 82 degrees. If we would have had a tailwind the temperatures would have been much higher. This was the most pleasant 110 miles I have ever ridden. The stop at ledger rock was a perfect fit for the forth of July. Settlers headed for Oregon passed by this rock. In the evening after all the animals were cared for and dinner was finished some would pass the time by carving their name and the date of their passing into this huge rock, leaving a record of their journey. Somehow to visit this landmark on the 4th of July, traveling under our own power and at the mercy of the elements, at least during the day, seemed especially fitting. At 5 pm we were treated to a barbecue by a local caterer, what a treat. Tomorrow is a late start and an easy day, after that the serious climbing begins.
Average speed: 13.2 mph Elapsed Time: 8:31:00 Total distance: 110.08 miles
