Day 17 Wednesday, July 8th Dubois, Wy (6917') to Riverton, WY (5500')

Tom says: Leaving Dubois we entered the well known Wind River canyon where we initially saw interesting rock formations to the north and green pasture to the south

As the canyon walls faded there were some beautiful red walls that contrasted stunningly with the crystal clear blue sky. Soon, as we pedaled on to Riverton, the landscape became more monotonous. A notable exception was Crowheart Butte, which marks the area where a famous battle of American Natives was fought for control of hunting rights.

Ken says: According to Mike Munk the ride leader this was to be an active rest day, even though we covered 79.56 miles plus another 3.6 to and from breakfast, and 1250 foot of climbing. But it was easier on the bike than on paper so it really was an active rest day. Tomorrow is the biggie. We meet an elderly gentleman on the road on horseback today, I waved and he waved in return and said 'God Bless You Today". Evidently some of our riders talked to him and he is a preacher riding from the east coast to the west coast with only the clothes on his back relying on the belief that God will provide. He has done pretty well so far and only has two more states to go.
