As we approached the mountains after leaving Idaho Falls, we climbed through some verdant foothills. Most were covered with a wheatlike grain, possibly barley. This cabin looked very peaceful. We faced some stiff headwinds that came down the slopes at us.The green valley shown here was in a little valley on Rt 31 at the foot of our first big climb for the day.

After that first 6 mile climb, we gave up most of our elevation gain and started up a 7+ mile grade to Teton Pass Summit.

The exhilaration of getting to the summit was dwarfed by the beauty of the views of Jackson Hole.
Today we left Idaho Falls and crossed two passes, Pine creek summit at 6764' and then down somewhat and back up to 8431' to cross Teton Pass Summit and then back down into Jackson or Jackson Hole, whichever you prefer, to spend the night. The back side of Teton Pass Summit was a decent down a 10% grade for 6 miles. Obvious
ly we were on the brakes most of the time. Had we not used the brakes we probably would have reached 60 mph or better. this decent has many curves although they are not really technical in nature you cannot see the bottom, therefore brakes were used. at one point we thought things were smelling rather hot so we pulled into a lookout point to check the temperature of our rims. it turned out that a guy moving to the lower 48 from Alaska had pulled his pickup and trailer into this lookout point because he had lost his brakes and was waiting for a wrecker to take him to the bottom. As you can see we crossed into Wyoming our third state today. Spectacular views abound.
